PhilemonWorks
Cincom Smalltalk’s application development system, Cincom® WebVelocity™, achieves great results. Delivering radical innovation in the web deployment of systems, WebVelocity brings the classic power of the Smalltalk development environment to the browser. With WebVelocity, you can design, develop and deploy your application from the browser.
Ernest Micklei, founder of PhilemonWorks and the first European customer for WebVelocity, has worked with Smalltalk for many years and was very pleased with one of his developments.
It is really logical to see that if you have less technology, the development is easy and you can reuse components. You will then have cost savings, revenue enhancement and the productivity improves.
Ernest Micklei, founder of PhilemonWorks
After working with Java for a few years and switching to Cincom Smalltalk, Micklei saw a 60% decrease in development time. This is attributed to the following factors:
- The dynamic Smalltalk language allows you to write less code to implement features.
- The interactive development environment (Smalltalk image) allows you to work in a short code-run-test-debug cycle without long rebuilds.
- Integrated deployment facilities of WebVelocity allow you to deploy faster and therefore more often.
Micklei saw WebVelocity as an integration of several components and products that have been made into a single web development environment. In the past, PhilemonWorks used different technologies that required different development tools, but WebVelocity brought all of those together. Micklei was impressed that WebVelocity allowed him to develop all of the applications in one environment.
What used to take PhilemonWorks five days to develop with Java, took them two days to develop with Cincom Smalltalk. WebVelocity’s language and frameworks, along with many other factors, attributed to this success.
